A 71-year-old woman died after being struck by a VIA Rail passenger train in Windsor’s east end on Tuesday afternoon, just before 4 p.m. The incident occurred near Lauzon Parkway, between Catherine Street and Lauzon Line.
According to Windsor police, the woman was attempting to cross the tracks when she was hit by an oncoming train. A spokesperson for the police said the incident appears to have been accidental. VIA Rail confirmed the train was carrying 63 passengers, but none were injured.
The company expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of safety around railway crossings. VIA Rail reminded the public—pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike—to always be vigilant, respect signals, and avoid railway property. They also collaborate with Operation Lifesaver Canada to promote safety through awareness campaigns.
The woman was declared dead at the scene, and traffic in the area was delayed for several hours during the investigation. Police are asking witnesses to come forward.
