A 78-year-old motorcyclist from Charing Cross has died following a crash on Talbot Trail in Chatham-Kent, after hitting a piece of furniture that had fallen onto the road.

The collision occurred around 2:38 p.m. on Saturday between Bloomfield Road and Craford Road. Police say the motorcycle, operated by the lone rider, struck the furniture, lost control, veered into a ditch, and ultimately hit a tree.

The rider sustained critical injuries and was transported to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have determined that the furniture had fallen off a vehicle traveling in the area before the crash. The driver of that vehicle, a 67-year-old woman from Blenheim, has been identified.

The Traffic Management Unit took over the investigation due to the severity of the incident. Talbot Trail was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact Const. Brandon McKeen at brandonmc@chatham-kent.ca or call 519-355-1092.
