A 80-year-old woman has died after being struck by a pickup truck in Scarborough on Tuesday afternoon, Toronto police say.

Officers were called to the area of Kingston Road and Midland Avenue around 2:30 p.m., where they found the woman injured in the roadway. She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them.

Police say the pickup driver, an 81-year-old, briefly left the scene before returning a short time later. The driver was not hurt, is cooperating with investigators, and no charges have been laid at this time.

Early findings suggest the woman may have slipped and fallen before being hit by a pickup truck that was reversing from a driveway. Investigators are still determining whether she had been on the sidewalk or in the roadway when the incident occurred. The driver and the pedestrian did not know each other.

Traffic Services continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
