An early morning apartment fire in Toronto’s east end has claimed the life of a man in his 70s and left a woman, also in her 70s, in critical condition. Emergency crews were called shortly after midnight to the area of Gerrard Street East and Glenside Avenue, where they encountered heavy smoke on the building’s fourth floor.

One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while paramedics transported the critically injured woman to hospital. A third person was treated for minor injuries.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause, which remains undetermined. Road closures in the area have since been lifted, with Gerrard Street East reopening around 7 a.m.
