One person has died and four others were hospitalized following an apartment fire in Mississauga’s Cooksville area on Tuesday afternoon. Emergency crews were called to a building near North Service Road and Asta Drive, west of Cawthra Road, around 12:50 p.m.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames in a first-floor unit and quickly brought the blaze under control. One occupant was found without vital signs and later pronounced dead. Peel paramedics said four others were taken to hospital, mainly for smoke inhalation.
Residents were evacuated as fire crews monitored air quality before allowing re-entry. The cause and circumstances of the fire remain under investigation. Authorities say there is currently no indication of anything suspicious, and Mississauga Fire is leading the investigation with assistance from Peel police and the Ontario Fire Marshal.
