An Aurora resident is facing criminal charges after police say he drove a vehicle through busy recreational areas at an Ajax park, narrowly missing numerous families and children.
According to Durham Regional Police, the incident unfolded at approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 18 at Rotary Park on Lake Driveway West. Investigators allege a white Toyota sedan travelled through the park’s playground, splash pad, and pedestrian pathways while the area was crowded with visitors. Despite the dangerous situation, no injuries were reported.
Officers later located the vehicle near Westney Road South and Bayly Street West and attempted to pull it over, but police say the driver refused to stop. Authorities allege the suspect later returned to the park and drove across a pedestrian bridge before being spotted again near Harwood Avenue South and Bayly Street East.
Police say the driver attempted to evade officers, striking an uninvolved GMC SUV during the pursuit before being taken into custody. No injuries were reported in that collision.
The accused, identified as 23-year-old Ismail Abrahimzada of Aurora, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for police.
