Residents in Barrhaven gathered Sunday evening to honour Peter Clark, a crossing guard killed in a recent hit-and-run, remembering him as a kind and dedicated figure in the community.

The vigil took place at Weybridge Park, where family members, students, school staff and fellow crossing guards came together to pay tribute. Clark’s wife, Amanda, spoke about his deep commitment to helping children safely cross the street, describing him as someone who valued connection and took pride in being part of the neighbourhood.

Clark was struck while working at the intersection of Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive near a local elementary school on March 23. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries. Police have since charged a 19-year-old man, who has admitted to leaving the scene but is contesting the more serious charge of dangerous driving causing death.

During the vigil, speakers reflected on Clark’s warmth and the relationships he built with students, whom he affectionately called “his kids.” His wife also shared that his role helped him manage social anxiety by giving him meaningful daily interactions with others.

Fellow crossing guards and community members emphasized the lasting impact of his death and called for greater caution on the roads, especially in school zones. The gathering served both as a tribute to Clark’s life and a reminder of the importance of road safety.
