Human remains believed to belong to an adult man were found inside a Penetanguishene residence destroyed by fire over the weekend, according to provincial police. Authorities are still working to confirm the identity.

The blaze erupted late Saturday on Champlain Road near Our Lady of the Rosary Mission Church, prompting a large emergency response after several 911 calls were made. Firefighters from Penetanguishene, along with crews from Midland, Tay Township and Tiny Township, battled the fully involved structure fire for hours.

Officials said the home was completely lost, though the attached retail portion of the property was successfully protected. One person had been reported missing following the fire.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has completed its investigation and found no indication of criminal activity. The Southern Georgian Bay OPP Major Crime Unit, the Fire Marshal’s office and the Chief Coroner’s office continue to investigate the incident.
