Ontario has issued a $70,000 fine to a Toronto-based company after a worker was critically injured by a reversing forklift at a Brampton logistics facility. The incident occurred on Aug. 14, 2023, at National Logistics Services on Chrysler Drive, where a worker standing in a designated pathway for pedestrians and equipment was struck by a forklift backing out of a trailer.
According to the province, the forklift operator—employed through a temp agency—failed to look behind while reversing, despite having received training on pedestrian safety around forklifts. Both workers involved had been instructed on these hazards.
The ministry determined that the company did not take adequate steps to separate pedestrian routes from areas used by material-handling equipment. In addition to the fine, the court applied a mandatory 25 per cent victim surcharge, which supports a provincial fund for crime victims.
