A building in downtown Port Perry sustained significant damage after a driver experienced a medical episode and crashed into it early Saturday morning.

Durham Police reported that a 63-year-old man was driving a grey Toyota Sienna van in the parking lot of a commercial building at 1869 Scugog Street just before 7 a.m. When the driver suffered a medical emergency, he lost control of the van, crashing into the building. The impact caused about $100,000 in damage to the structure, which houses several businesses, including a pizza shop.

Due to the extent of the structural damage, the Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case. The investigation is ongoing.
