A 59-year-old Burlington man has been arrested in connection with a major fuel tanker crash on the QEW near Lincoln, Ontario, that occurred on January 12. The incident caused the tanker to spill 53,000 litres of diesel and led to a prolonged highway shutdown.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the driver of a black Mercedes was allegedly “brake-checking” and driving aggressively around 7:45 a.m. in the Fort Erie-bound lanes. This caused a white SUV to swerve and collide with a fuel tanker, which then crashed through a barrier and overturned on the South Service Road, resulting in significant environmental damage due to the diesel spill.

Police allege the Mercedes driver fled the scene without reporting the incident. Following an investigation, Mirkarim Mousavi has been charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm.

Mousavi has been released from custody and is due in court in St. Catharines on June 9.
