A multiple-alarm fire in Hamilton’s east end Thursday morning has left several residents displaced, with the city fire department suggesting a cat may have sparked the blaze. Firefighters arrived around 7:15 a.m. at 2520 Barton Street East, where flames and smoke were visible from a top-floor unit.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe explained that a cat may have tipped a recently used ashtray onto a bed, igniting the fire. The animal was found alive and handed to animal control, though it is unclear if it caused the fire. The unit was completely destroyed, and overall building damage is estimated at $600,000. Eight apartments were affected, with four residents displaced. One person suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene.

The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified as the investigation continues.
