A transport truck carrying cattle overturned in the median of Highway 11 near Bracebridge on Wednesday evening, prompting a full highway closure in both directions.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the crash, reported around 6 p.m. near Cedar Lane and Taylor Road, resulted in several cattle being killed and others wandering onto the highway. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Emergency crews, along with a local farmer, worked to secure the loose animals while dozens of emergency vehicles responded to the scene. Commuters trapped in traffic described seeing cows roaming the roadway and others lying lifeless following the crash.
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area as the investigation and cleanup continue.
