Chatham-Kent police have confirmed the tragic death of a young child following a collision with a train early Saturday morning.

Emergency services responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a train near Keil Drive in Chatham at around 1:10 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the child with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of first responders, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

To respect the family’s privacy, the child’s identity has not been released. Rail traffic was temporarily halted but has since resumed. Sgt. Jason Herder of the Traffic Management Unit expressed his condolences to the victim and family. Support services are being offered to the family and first responders through Victim Services and peer support programs.
