A 9-year-old child remains in critical condition after a house fire in Markham on Friday, according to York Regional Police. Emergency crews were called shortly after noon to a home near 16th Avenue and 9th Line.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames spreading from the garage into the house, after receiving reports that a child was trapped inside. The child was rescued and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire and assessing damage to the property, though no further updates have been provided. Police say road closures remain in place in the area.
