A young child was taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle near an elementary school in Barrhaven on Thursday afternoon.

Ottawa paramedics said the collision happened around 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of Main Halyard Lane and Flagstaff Drive, close to St. Juan Diego School. The child, believed to be about five years old, was transported to CHEO in stable but serious condition.

Local councillor David Hill expressed concern about the incident and extended his thoughts to the child’s family, friends and witnesses.

Hill noted that traffic calming measures for Flagstaff Drive had been approved last year but had not yet been installed because such work typically begins after the spring thaw. He said he has asked city staff to speed up street sweeping so the traffic calming features can be installed sooner.

He also said efforts are underway to accelerate plans for a three-way stop at the intersection and to hire a crossing guard for the corner of Main Halyard Lane.
