Ottawa firefighters rescued a young child after their leg became trapped in a concrete opening at a school in Barrhaven on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called around 4:07 p.m. to a school in the 200 block of Tartan Drive near Standherd Drive after a five-year-old stepped into a disused fence-post hole and became stuck.

Fire officials said the child was trapped up to the knee inside the narrow concrete space. Firefighters carefully dug around the area and used tools to break away sections of cement in order to safely free the child.

The rescue took about 30 minutes. The child was medically assessed afterward and did not sustain any injuries.
