An 18-year-old man is facing four weapons-related charges following a collision between a bicycle and an e-scooter near downtown Whitby on Friday afternoon.
Durham Police responded to a disturbance around 1:20 p.m. at Dundas Street and Garden Street after an e-scooter rider heading westbound struck a cyclist on the sidewalk. The incident led to a verbal altercation between the two individuals.
Witnesses informed police that one of the men had left the area before officers arrived, discarding a backpack in the process. The bag was later recovered and found to contain a firearm.
Police located and arrested the suspect, identified as Jhavane Hanson of Whitby. He now faces charges including possession of a prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession, and two counts of possessing a weapon despite a court order.
Hanson was held for a bail hearing. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Central West Division.
