Halton police have reported a significant increase in in-person collision reports following vehicle accidents this past weekend, indicating that reporting centers are no longer accommodating walk-in visits. Recent weather conditions, including snow, rain, and low temperatures, have created slippery and icy roads, likely contributing to the uptick in accidents.

In November 2024, Halton Regional Police had anticipated a rise in winter-related collisions and provided drivers with essential guidelines for post-accident procedures. To alleviate the influx of reports, the police have implemented an online tool called ‘Start from Your Device,’ which enables drivers to complete 85 percent of their collision report prior to arriving at a reporting center. This initiative aims to minimize wait times at locations in Milton, Oakville, and Burlington.

Drivers involved in minor property damage incidents are advised to utilize the services of Accident Support Services International for reporting. Additionally, motorists are reminded of their legal responsibilities under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, which requires that any accident resulting in personal injury or property damage exceeding $2,000 be reported to law enforcement. Officers will respond to all incidents involving injuries or suspected violations.

With snow predicted in the coming days, law enforcement officials are urging drivers to reduce their speed, maintain safe distances, and ensure their vehicles are equipped with snow tires. Motorists are also encouraged to inform their insurance providers about the installation of snow tires, as many insurers offer discounts for such measures. Furthermore, police have issued a caution regarding driving without insurance, emphasizing that a conviction for operating an uninsured vehicle incurs a minimum fine of $5,000 in Ontario.
