A section of Highway 402 westbound near Strathroy remains closed following a serious collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle that caused a hazardous chemical spill, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Middlesex County.
The crash occurred Wednesday afternoon, shortly after 1 p.m., when a passenger vehicle cut off a tanker truck carrying approximately 45,000 litres of monochloroacetic acid. The truck veered into a ditch, leading to a chemical leak. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
On Thursday morning, OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk confirmed that hazmat crews are still working to safely unload the acid from the tanker. The westbound lanes between Centre Road and Kerwood Road will remain closed for the rest of the day.
Despite the spill, authorities say there is no need for evacuation or shelter-in-place orders. However, the public is urged to stay clear of the area for safety reasons. Sanchuk warned against individuals attempting to access the closed highway out of curiosity, stressing that the closure is for public health and safety.
OPP, emergency responders, and the Ministry of the Environment are continuing to monitor the situation and coordinate cleanup efforts.
