A construction worker was rescued by Ottawa firefighters after falling about 18 feet into a pit at an east-end work site Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to the 1200 block of Hemlock Road shortly after 3 p.m. The injured worker was unable to get out of the pit due to his injuries, prompting Ottawa Fire Services’ rope rescue team to use specialized equipment to remove him safely.

Firefighters secured the worker in a rescue basket and hoisted him from the area before transferring him to paramedics. He was treated for a compound femur fracture and taken to hospital by ambulance in serious but stable condition.
