Sarnia police have filed impaired driving charges following a crash detected by a cell phone’s crash alert feature.
Early Saturday morning, just after midnight, authorities responded to an incident on Waterworks Road near Confederation Line. Upon arrival, officers found a severely damaged vehicle in a cornfield, with the driver—who was the sole occupant—walking around the wreckage. The driver, who sustained only minor injuries, had caused significant damage, including the destruction of a hydro pole.
The car had come to a stop approximately 100 meters into the field after the collision. Evidence of alcohol and cannabis use was found in the vehicle.
Though the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, he could not provide a breath sample. As a result, a blood test was conducted. The 23-year-old man from Front Street is facing impaired driving charges, and additional charges may follow once the blood test results are analyzed.
