A 55-year-old cyclist died early Sunday morning following a fatal collision with a vehicle in East Gwillimbury, about 10 kilometers north of Aurora.
York Regional Police responded to the scene at Highway 11 and Morning Sideroad around 12:50 a.m. The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, though authorities have not yet identified the victim.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
According to police, the driver witnessed another vehicle run over the cyclist after the initial collision. Authorities believe the second vehicle may have mistaken the cyclist for roadkill. Police are now asking any drivers in the area who might have driven over something they believed to be an animal to come forward.
Staff Sgt. Mike McKeraghan clarified that the second driver is “not necessarily in any trouble,” but police are seeking information to piece together the events leading up to the fatality.
Investigators are also asking for dashcam footage or any witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation.
Update – According the police, the second driver who fled the scene after hitting the cyclist was arrested on Tuesday, September 9th. The driver, identified as 45-year old Ahmad Nadi of Newmarket, was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.
