A dog attack investigation in St. Thomas has expanded into a criminal case involving alleged drug trafficking and prohibited weapons after police uncovered illegal items during a separate collision investigation.
Officers were called to Sunset Drive near Wilson Avenue on July 7 after two people were reportedly bitten by a dog. The victims had entered a Dodge Caravan to get medical help before the vehicle crashed into the front of a nearby business.
While examining the incident, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and located suspected drugs inside the van. A search warrant later resulted in the seizure of more than 32 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of crack cocaine, brass knuckles and a digital scale. Police estimate the seized drugs have a street value of about $2,700.
As a result of the investigation, a 44-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman from St. Thomas have been charged with drug trafficking and weapons-related offences. The man is also facing additional charges, including assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
