A dog in Toronto’s Canary District has been euthanized after being linked to two serious attacks, including a fatal incident involving a small pet named Crystal.
The most recent attack occurred late on March 21 near Mill Street, as Crystal, a nearly 10-year-old Maltese shih tzu, was returning home with her owner. They briefly crossed paths with a young boy handling a larger American bulldog-mastiff mix. Moments later, the larger dog broke free and rushed toward them.
Despite the owner’s attempt to pick up Crystal, the attack happened too quickly. The owner was bitten while trying to intervene, and Crystal sustained catastrophic injuries. Witnesses nearby described a chaotic and distressing scene, with bystanders rushing to help, calling emergency services, and attempting to find an animal hospital that could provide urgent care.
Crystal was eventually transported to a veterinary facility, while her owner was taken to Toronto Western Hospital for treatment of a hand injury. Although the owner’s wound was treated without the need for stitches, Crystal’s condition was far more severe. Extensive surgery was required, but she died a few hours after being admitted.
Community members later noted a previous incident involving the same dog, in which another pet was injured. Toronto Animal Services confirmed the animal had been involved in two dangerous occurrences.
The dog was removed from its residence following enforcement action and later euthanized. The owner has been charged in connection with the incidents, as officials emphasize ongoing efforts to improve public safety and prevent similar attacks.
