A driver has been charged with careless driving after a pickup truck towing an RV trailer overturned on Highway 417 in Ottawa late Monday night, sending a refrigerator into oncoming traffic.

Emergency crews responded to the eastbound lanes near Lees Avenue around 9:30 p.m. following a two-vehicle collision. Ontario Provincial Police said the truck and trailer flipped after the driver attempted to pass slower-moving vehicles and lost control.

During the crash, a refrigerator from inside the trailer was thrown across the centre median into the westbound lanes. Fortunately, no vehicles struck the appliance.

Two people were assessed by paramedics at the scene, but no hospital transport was required. Police confirmed the driver received a careless driving charge, which carries a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 417 reopened shortly after midnight.
