A 42-year-old man from Little Current on Manitoulin Island is facing impaired and dangerous driving charges after crashing his vehicle into traffic lights in Sault Ste. Marie on May 11.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Trunk Road and Highway 17. Sault Ste. Marie Police, along with Anishinabek Police and the OPP, responded to the scene, where they found the traffic lights had been knocked out due to the collision.

Police say the driver showed signs of alcohol impairment and later provided multiple breath samples, all exceeding the legal limit. He was charged with dangerous driving, impaired operation, and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80.

As per provincial regulations, the driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle was impounded for a week. He was released with an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on July 7.
