An Ontario man convicted in a fatal high-speed crash that killed a woman and her two dogs in Clearview Township has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, with credit for time already served in custody.

Dan Richie, 36, appeared in a Barrie courtroom Monday for sentencing after being found guilty in June of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in connection with the September 2023 collision. He was reportedly travelling at 173 km/h before running a stop sign and crashing into another vehicle.

The collision killed Katie Marshall and her dogs, Sage and Ry. Her husband, Brody Marshall, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. Richie’s partner and their five children were also in his vehicle, with two of the children injured, including one who suffered a fractured skull.

During the sentencing hearing, 20 victim impact statements detailed the devastating consequences of the crash for Marshall’s family and loved ones. Her husband described enduring nightmares and severe physical and psychological trauma, while her parents spoke about the profound loss and lasting health problems they have experienced since her death.

Marshall worked as a security guard at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and was passionate about horses and barrel racing. Family members wore lavender and black shirts bearing her initials in court to honour her memory.

Justice Jocelyn Speyer said Richie’s deliberate decisions led to the fatal collision. The court also heard that he had 11 previous speeding convictions, a driving record the judge described as appalling.

Richie had initially been released on bail but was later taken back into custody after breaching his release conditions. He has remained in custody since a subsequent bail review failed.

The defence had sought a two-year prison sentence and an eight-year driving prohibition. Richie told the court he had no one to blame but himself, acknowledging his irresponsible driving and expressing remorse to the affected families.

In addition to his prison sentence, Richie will be prohibited from driving for 15 years after his release.
