The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a crash in Hamilton’s east end that left a 34-year-old man seriously injured while fleeing from police late Wednesday night. Around 11:40 p.m., Hamilton Police officers in a marked cruiser attempted to stop a “vehicle of interest” on Aikman Avenue.

The driver did not comply, and the vehicle—later confirmed as stolen—was involved in a collision with a taxi shortly afterward on Sanford Avenue South.

The suspect was arrested and transported to hospital with serious injuries. The taxi driver sustained only minor injuries.

The SIU has invoked its mandate to investigate incidents involving serious injury or death during police interactions. The investigation team includes two investigators, two forensic specialists, a collision reconstructionist, and designated subject and witness officials.
