A 19-year-old e-scooter rider from Kitchener suffered serious injuries after a collision with an SUV in Waterloo on Thursday morning.

Waterloo Regional Police said the crash occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Northfield Drive West when the rider was travelling eastbound. Investigators allege the driver of a Toyota RAV4 was changing lanes when the vehicle struck the e-scooter.

The impact threw the rider from the e-scooter, and he was taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The SUV driver, a 25-year-old man from Quebec, remained at the scene. Police said the investigation is ongoing and charges are expected.

Eastbound Northfield Drive West was closed between Parkside Drive and Conestogo Road for several hours during the investigation before reopening shortly after 3 p.m.
