Nine residents have been forced from their homes after a fire broke out overnight in a semi-detached duplex on Guigues Avenue in Ottawa’s Lowertown area.

Ottawa Fire Services responded just after midnight on Wednesday following multiple 9-1-1 calls. When crews arrived, they found flames on the exterior of the two-and-a-half-storey home, spreading up toward the roof. A second alarm was declared shortly after 12:30 a.m. to bring in additional resources.

Firefighters confirmed the building was empty after conducting two thorough searches. They also carried out salvage operations to protect personal belongings from smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
