Eight people were taken to hospital with minor injuries after a chemical-related mishap at a North York condominium Sunday evening, according to Toronto paramedics.
Emergency crews were called shortly after 5 p.m. to 78 Harrison Garden Blvd., near Yonge Street and north of Highway 401. The incident occurred in the pool area of a building when a worker accidentally combined two chemicals, producing a cloud of gas that spread beyond the immediate area.
Paramedics assessed 13 people at the scene, with eight transported to hospital as a precaution. Firefighters isolated the affected space and ventilated the building, a process that has since been completed, allowing the site to be cleared.
About 30 residents were forced to leave the building, with TTC buses used to provide temporary shelter. Emergency services, including paramedics and police, were also called in as the situation escalated.
Firefighters ventilated the building, and air quality returned to safe levels roughly two hours later.
