A fatal house fire in Brampton claimed the life of an elderly man late Wednesday night.

Emergency crews responded to a semi-detached home on Royal Salisbury Way at around 11 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames on the second floor of the residence, which contained two apartment units.

Firefighters located an elderly male occupant inside a second-floor area of the home and brought him outside, where he was pronounced dead. Initial concerns that two other residents were missing were later resolved after officials confirmed they were not at the property when the fire began.

Residents in the neighbouring unit evacuated safely, and no additional injuries were reported. Damage was largely confined to the second floor of the building.

Officials believe the fire may have originated in a second-floor bedroom, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The Office of the Fire Marshal has taken over the probe and will examine all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the home’s fire alarm systems.

Police continue to secure the scene while the investigation remains ongoing.
