A two-year-old child has died after a tragic incident involving a vehicle on a rural property Sunday evening in Robillard Township in northern Ontario.

Ontario Provincial Police say the incident happened in a driveway in the small community near Englehart, south of Kirkland Lake. Early findings indicate a passenger vehicle was being moved a short distance within the driveway when the child suffered fatal injuries.

Investigators believe the driver was unaware the toddler had exited the vehicle before it was moved.

The child was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but was later pronounced dead.

OPP traffic and forensic investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, working under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario. Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
