A section of Highway 89 in Cookstown was closed Monday afternoon following a fatal two-vehicle crash near 6th Line and County Road 56. Emergency crews responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m., where one person was pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed.

Paramedics reported that another individual at the scene refused medical treatment. Highway 89 remained closed until early Tuesday morning as OPP Technical Collision Investigators and a reconstructionist examined the scene.

Sgt. Joe Brisebois of the Ontario Provincial Police described the situation as “very active.” Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Update – The deceased victim is identified to be a 51-year-old man from Alliston.
