A fire broke out Sunday night at a vacant multi-unit residential building on Fifth Avenue in Timmins, prompting a large response from local fire crews.
Timmins Fire Chief Scott Atkinson said the call came in around 9:50 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames climbing the side and reaching the roof at the rear of the structure. The building, which had seven or eight units, was vacant, under renovation, and in the process of changing ownership.
Roughly 20 to 25 firefighters from the Timmins, Schumacher, and Mt. Joy stations responded and managed to contain the fire with a defensive strategy. Crews remained on scene until about 3:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported. While nearby homes were spared from fire damage, some may have experienced basement flooding due to water used in firefighting efforts.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Timmins police have been called in, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office may assist if needed.
