A fire in Newmarket Wednesday morning prompted a major response, with six fire trucks and about two dozen firefighters dispatched to the scene. Crews arrived at a two-storey residential building on Eagle Street to find smoke emanating from the first floor.

Firefighters identified that the smoke was coming from the unit where the fire likely started, as well as the neighboring attached unit. Smoke alarms were sounding as fire crews evacuated the building.

One firefighter sustained an injury and was treated at a local hospital, but has since been released. During the emergency response, Eagle Street was temporarily closed to traffic, though it has since reopened.

Officials determined the cause of the fire to be electrical, but the extent of the damage has not been disclosed. The fire service reminded the public that electrical equipment is a leading cause of home fires in Ontario, and emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms and a home escape plan in emergencies.
