Firefighters in downtown Ottawa tackled a multi-alarm blaze Saturday evening that threatened nearby buildings. Crews were called around 7:39 p.m. to a mixed-use building on the 100 block of Bank Street after smoke was reported in a hallway.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke near the basement stairs and declared a working fire at 7:48 p.m., followed by a second alarm shortly after 8:00 p.m. as conditions worsened. Teams fought the flames from both inside and outside the structure while ensuring no one was trapped inside.

The fire was brought under control by 8:34 p.m., and an investigator was sent to determine its cause and origin.
