The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called to probe a crash on Saturday night involving a suspected impaired driver that left two people injured.

Toronto police responded around 6:30 p.m. to reports of a vehicle speeding erratically in the Bloor Street West and The East Mall area. The vehicle later crashed, injuring two individuals, prompting the SIU to take over the investigation.

According to the SIU, officers were attempting to stop a Honda Civic for speeding when the driver collided with an SUV at Bloor Street West and The West Mall. After the crash, the driver tried to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward. Police confirmed that a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

The SIU reported that both the man and woman in the SUV sustained serious injuries. Toronto paramedics transported the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while Peel paramedics took the woman to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The area was cleared, and roads were reopened by 8:35 a.m. on Sunday.
