Two people are fighting for their lives after a street racing incident ended in a devastating three-vehicle collision in Scarborough on Friday morning.
Toronto police say the crash occurred around 9:39 a.m. on Highway 2A near Meadowvale Road. Officers arrived to find multiple wrecked vehicles, extensive debris covering the roadway, and several people injured.
According to investigators, a green Lamborghini and a white Mercedes E-Class were speeding alongside each other when the Mercedes lost control. The vehicle crashed into a white Ford F-150, left the roadway, and slammed into a tree.
The Mercedes was being driven by a 15-year-old girl, who, along with her 24-year-old male passenger, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital. The driver of the pickup, a 44-year-old man, and an 11-month-old child escaped with minor injuries.
Police allege the Lamborghini driver fled before officers arrived and remains outstanding. Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or captured it on dash camera to come forward with information.
Update – Following the investigation, police identified the Lamborghini driver as 42-year-old Toronto resident Akil Gordon Heywood. He has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene of a collision, and stunt driving.
