A fire at a private retirement residence in Stayner has displaced 25 residents, all of whom are currently sheltering at a nearby church. Clearview’s deputy fire chief, Kevin Spears, said emergency crews were called just after 9:10 a.m. Wednesday for a reported electrical fire at the building on Highway 26. While firefighters were en route, they were advised that smoke was spreading throughout the structure.
Staff evacuated all residents before crews arrived, with firefighters assisting one person who uses a wheelchair. The church across the road provided immediate shelter for residents and staff. Simcoe County has since arranged temporary accommodations for 15 residents, while the remaining individuals are staying with family members.
Clearview Mayor Doug Measures said four people were taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries from tripping during the evacuation. Fire officials confirmed the injuries were not related to smoke or flames.
Collingwood Fire Department assisted by supplying a tower truck and crew, while Springwater Fire Department is handling other calls in Clearview as local crews remain focused on the incident. Simcoe County also deployed ambulances and support personnel to assist evacuees at the scene.
The fire and smoke caused extensive damage to the building, known as The Belmont, a former assisted living facility that had recently been renovated under new ownership. Fire officials believe the blaze originated in the basement, and the Ontario Fire Marshal has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Firefighters continue to work on fully extinguishing the fire, and authorities are urging the public to avoid the area. Highway 26 remains closed between Scott and John streets.
