Ottawa fire crews rescued a passenger trapped inside a damaged sedan after a crash with a commercial salt truck on the westbound off-ramp of Highway 417 at Boundary Road on Friday.
Emergency services were called to the scene just after 11:30 a.m. amid concerns that several occupants might be trapped. Firefighters found the four-door car heavily damaged on the passenger side, with all airbags deployed.
Four people were inside the vehicle when crews arrived. While the driver and three passengers were able to get out on their own, one occupant remained trapped inside. Firefighters secured the vehicle, prepared safety measures, and entered through the driver’s side to provide medical assistance and keep the passenger warm.
Using hydraulic rescue equipment, crews removed the rear driver-side door and freed the trapped individual shortly after noon.
Paramedics evaluated five people involved in the crash, and four were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
