One person is still missing following an early-morning fire at a seniors apartment building in Colborne.
Northumberland County says the fire broke out shortly after 4:10 a.m. Friday at a Northumberland County Housing Corporation complex at 8 King Street West. Emergency crews evacuated residents as flames spread through the building, and county officials remained on site to support tenants and coordinate the response.
Four people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including three firefighters and one resident. About 20 tenants have been displaced as a result of the fire.
Social services staff have activated the county’s emergency response plan and opened the Keeler Centre in Colborne as an evacuation centre. Roughly 15 residents are currently using the facility, along with several pets. Efforts are ongoing to arrange temporary housing for those affected.
Ontario Provincial Police are asking the public to avoid the area while crews continue emergency operations. Roads immediately surrounding the scene remain closed, though all other county roads are open.
