A 70-year-old man from Hamilton is facing multiple charges after his vehicle struck a police officer during a traffic stop in Meaford on Wednesday night.

Provincial police say the incident occurred along Highway 26 near Algonquin Drive, where an officer was speaking with another driver when an eastbound vehicle’s passenger-side mirror clipped the officer and continued driving. The officer sustained minor injuries.

Investigators later located the vehicle and identified the driver, who is now charged with failing to report an accident, failing to remain at the scene, careless driving, and failing to slow down and proceed with caution for an emergency vehicle.

The Ontario Provincial Police emphasized the importance of the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and, when safe, change lanes when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Police warned that ignoring the law can result in fines, demerit points, or even serious injury or death.
