A head-on collision on Highway 48 near Aurora Road in Whitchurch-Stouffville on Sunday night has left one person dead and four others hospitalized. The crash occurred around 9:20 p.m., prompting a significant emergency response, including multiple ambulances and special units from York Region Paramedics.
Five individuals were assessed at the scene, with four transported to a trauma centre. No updates were given on their conditions. The affected stretch of Highway 48 between St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Common has since reopened.
Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate and are appealing to the public for any witness accounts or dashcam footage.
Update – Police says a teen driver has been arrested after having fled the scene of the collision and is facing multiple charges.
