A house fire in Ottawa on Friday afternoon led to firefighters rescuing and treating a dog for smoke inhalation.

Ottawa Fire Services received a call at around 3:11 p.m. from a homeowner reporting heavy smoke inside a single-family residence on the 5600 block of Manotick Main Street. The caller said they had safely exited the home with their dog, but the animal had breathed in smoke.

When crews arrived, they found thick smoke pouring from the building. Firefighters quickly used an animal oxygen kit to treat the dog while other team members began attacking the fire.

Ottawa Police Service temporarily shut down Manotick Main Street to ensure emergency crews could work safely.

Low visibility conditions complicated efforts as a second crew advanced a hose line into the home. Flames were discovered in both the basement and on the main floor. No additional occupants were located inside.

The blaze was brought under control by 4:04 p.m. Fire officials said the dog responded well to oxygen treatment and was returned to its owner. The homeowner was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

Firefighters also doused insulation and stored materials to prevent rekindling and used high-powered fans to clear smoke from the structure. Two adults were displaced and are receiving support from Victim Services. An investigator has been assigned to determine the cause of the fire.
