The Ontario Provincial Police are responding to a series of crashes across the Greater Toronto Area, with several incidents linked to hazardous weather.
One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle on eastbound Highway 407 near Warden Avenue. According to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the individual had exited their car following a previous collision when the second incident occurred. Additional crashes have been reported along Highway 407, though no other injuries have been confirmed there.
Further north, the northbound lanes of Highway 404 were shut down at Bloomington Road due to multiple vehicle collisions and dangerous driving conditions. At least four vehicles were involved, and three people were transported to hospital with minor injuries. Police noted that while winter weather may have contributed, the investigation remains ongoing. The closure is expected to last for an extended period, with no clear reopening time.
Meanwhile, Highway 7 is closed between Whites Road and Brock Road in Pickering after several vehicles slid into ditches. No injuries have been reported in that area.
Later in the evening, a rollover collision near Consumers Road and Yorkland Boulevard involved one vehicle overturning while another left the area. Downtown traffic was also disrupted when a TTC streetcar derailed around 11:22 p.m., blocking the intersection at King Street and Spadina Avenue.
The closures come as Toronto and surrounding regions remain under a freezing drizzle advisory, with icy and hard-to-detect slippery conditions expected to persist through Saturday evening. Drivers are being urged to avoid affected areas and prepare for significant delays.
