Ottawa police say a driver was arrested overnight after crashing into a ditch and striking a hydro pole with a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit.

Officers responded to Dwyer Hill Road and Roger Stevens Drive just after midnight, where the driver sustained minor injuries. Tests showed a blood alcohol concentration of 130 mg, well above the legal limit of 80 mg.

The individual is now charged with impaired operation and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level over the legal threshold. Police urged residents to arrange safe transportation during the holiday season.

The incident comes as the Ottawa Police Service’s Festive RIDE campaign gets underway. During its first three days, officers issued six three-day licence suspensions and charged one driver with impaired driving.
