One person has died following a fire at a downtown Toronto high-rise on Tuesday morning.

Toronto Fire Services responded to reports of smoke on the 19th floor of a residential building at 200 Wellesley St. E. around 10:30 a.m. Firefighters located a small kitchen fire inside a unit and quickly extinguished the flames.

During a search of the apartment, crews found a man without vital signs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not determined whether the death was directly related to the fire. Toronto police are investigating the circumstances, including whether any criminal activity was involved.

The cause, origin, and circumstances of the fire remain under investigation. Firefighters also ventilated hallways, stairwells, and upper floors after smoke spread through parts of the building.
