A major intersection in Toronto’s east end has reopened following a large sinkhole caused by a watermain break that occurred late Wednesday night. The incident, which affected Coxwell and Cosburn Avenues, resulted in road collapse, flooding, and significant pavement damage.
The city reported that the break flooded at least eight homes, and four basements were affected. Although city officials initially expected the intersection to reopen by Monday, they confirmed on Sunday that the road is now accessible.
Local resident Evelyn Ruiz, who experienced flooding in her home, expressed frustration over the delayed response. She stated that the water wasn’t shut off until around 3:30 a.m., several hours after she first contacted authorities, allowing water to cause further damage.
Ruiz also mentioned a similar flood near the intersection just two months earlier, and claimed she was warned by a city employee that another such incident was likely. The city has not yet addressed her concerns.
